In the late 70’s Armando Barbon immigrated to Canada from Italy with his young family. He soon decided to go into business for himself. He began leaning English, bought a retail storefront and opened a small specialty delicatessen at the north end of Douglas St. in Victoria. As he and his family ran the business, he soon realized that in order to expand, the company would require a warehouse. It quickly grew to be North Douglas Distributors, a broadline distribution company delivering specialty foods to restaurants on Vancouver Island looking for hard to find, imported grocery products. The business expanded with a fresh seafood plant as well as other divisions such as frozen foods, paper and disposables, fresh protein and dairy. In 1996, North Douglas Distributors merged with a local produce company, built new coolers and began carrying a full line of fresh fruit and vegetables. Later, smallwares was added to the product mix.
In 2000, North Douglas Foodservice Distributor was purchased by SYSCO Corporation. Today, Sysco Victoria continues to service foodservice establishments and institutions on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Powell River. Now with 300 employees and over 40 trucks, we deliver product from Victoria to Port Hardy and all points in between. Our philosophy has remained the same, to provide quality service and products to our marketplace.
